Tech support
« on: January 30, 2012, 05:27:07 am »
There will be FAQs posted here, but unlike the previous 2 FAQ threads we will be answering questions on this one, hence the change in boards.
ie. Post any problems you're having with the site (subdomains included) on this thread and we'll attempt to explain the reason behind it and/or resolve the issue, then add it to the FAQs for others having that problem.
Most problems are caused by humans themselves, not computers. If a page doesn't work for you yet it works for everybody else, don't just assume it's our fault or start raging. There are a ton of different reasons an error may occur on any website, and we're going to try to work through some of them with you.

Rules
No spamming, flaming, excessive swearing or going off topic.
This thread is purely for tech support, nothing more. Any posts breaching one or more of the above will simply be removed.
*Also note that guests can't post here; you'll have to make an account.

Reporting a problem
In order to help you, it's best if we can replicate the problem ourselves. To do that it's ideal if we can emulate the situation under which the error occurred.
Please provide:
Your Operating System
Your Browser
The URL for which the error occured
The situation itself (eg. I was trying to download a chapter after hitting the "download" tab...)
First occurrence of the problem (Is this the first time it's happened? Was it working earlier today?)
A screenshot, if possible (sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Literally.)
If you're for some reason adverse to temporarily disabling your addons/extensions/plugins when reading the next section, you should list them here.

Before posting
1. Read existing FAQs and posts carefully. If your question has already been answered, chances are you post will just be deleted.
2. Try disabling your addons/plugins and anything else that may be interfering with the page.
3. If you have custom security settings, change them temporarily. (eg. re-enable cookies, Javascript, etc.)
4. Try using a different browser. It doesn't hurt to have more than 1 installed, even if you never use the secondary browser.
5. Consider flushing your DNS cache (go to the cmd and type "ipconfig /flushdns" without the quotes) or using a different device/connection (if available). A longshot, but if your problem pertains to either then there's little we can do for you (eg. Japanzai has been added to your HOSTS file, your device doesn't support JS, etc).

I can't download from your server using wget or a direct link (403)

This is by design. We are (at least attempting to) block access through means other than following the links provided.
We put up the download server as a replacement for the file hosts we were using previously (I'm sure you know all about the SOPA drama, MU going down, etc), so now the burden lies on our own server instead of free hosts. As such, the server is entirely supported by the 2 ads on the download pages provided. In other words, we need users to follow the links provided (and turn their adblock off) in order to have the server support itself.

If readers download sensibly and disable their ad blockers, we will continue to provide a free, no-wait download service. If we make more than enough to support the server, we will use the overflow to either purchase raws or to upgrade the server to allow for faster download speeds.
It may seem like a pain for a few users (and yes, those using wget and trying to grab links directly are the minority), but it's in your own interest to just follow the links and download like the majority do.

*On a side note, if you're wondering about the small file sizes, it's nothing to fret about. Our work will continue to be available in the same quality.
Now that our files are being hosted on our own server (as opposed to random hosts, where we didn't have to worry about file sizes), it's in our best interest the actually monitor the sizes of our files. Color pages will be saves as medium-maximum quality JPGs (slight quality loss), black and white pages will be saved as web PNG-8s instead of PNG-24s (99% of the time they're identical; PNG compression is lossless by nature. This means typically identical pages at a much lower size).

I can't see the download button on download.japanzai pages / the download button doesn't work

The download button is encased in an ad div. Most ad blockers will thus hide the download button as they would a regular ad.
A dick move, sure, but think about it. Can't see ads > no pittance from google > no funds for the server > no download server.

There are other addons such as noscript and NotScripts that may either hide the download button or stop it from functioning as designed.
As mentioned near the beginning of this thread, try disabling any addons or plugins that may interfere and enable Javascript. Most problems we've encountered and/or dealt with have rooted from third-party software and extensions, so please take the measures described earlier before reporting your problem.
If an addon is responsible, just add an exception for Japanzai and/or download.japanzai.

HTTP Error 403 Forbidden - Japanzai main site

This error is caused by our forum's firewall. Attempt to access our online reader; if it works then the firewall is definitely to blame.
We leave the firewall as is most of the time, but if certain problems arise we won't hesitate to tighten the restrictions it provides, in turn blocking some innocent users from accessing the site.

Site undergoing maintenance

This isn't an error on your end or ours. This message means exactly what is says.
Albeit rare, from time to time we may perform maintenance on the site that requires us to temporarily block all traffic to Japanzai.
If you see this message, just be patient.

You will, however, still be able to access ecchi.japanzai, h.japanzai and download.japanzai, since they aren't on this server.

The animated watermarks aren't disappearing!

Not strictly a tech issue... but still.
We use three different types of animated images: GIFs, misnamed GIFs and APNGs.
The first two will work on any modern browser, but APNGs are considered obsolete and unnecessary. Many disagree with that notion (myself for one), but it's up to those developing browsers, not us.
Support for APNGs was added to each of the following as of the dates/versions specified:

Web browsers
Gecko-based   Mozilla Firefox   v. 3 (June 17, 2008)
                        SeaMonkey   v. 2
Iceweasel and other rebranded Mozilla products by the Debian project   v. 4.0~b12
Opera   v. 9.5 (September 17, 2008)[16]
Google Chrome/Chromium   with APNG addon

Mobile
Opera Mobile   Windows Mobile

*Any complaints about the use of APNGs are not going to be answered or dealt with here. If you have any insight (eg. an extension to help with APNG support) then by all means post, but complaints about watermarks won't be addressed here.
**We did not create the above addon. It was posted in the chrome webstore a while ago.

I can't download from your server, I just get redirected

There's an auto-redirect set on the download button. For most this will initiate the download then redirect you to the main page, but a couple of people have just been redirected.
If you're redirected before the download starts, hit the back button, right click on the download button and select "save as" or "save link".

Problem - Cannot download with firefox

thanks !

but I can't download with FF 10. :/
I need to use chrome, is this normal ?

Solution

I'm happy \รด/
Now I understand why my FF dont want to download !
It's because my "network.http.sendRefererHeader" it's on 0 and source code need to change at 2.

Thanks for your work again~

The above shouldn't apply to 99% of users, but take it into consideration if you're experiencing a similar problem.
In case it wasn't already apparent, custom configurations may cause problems. If no other user has reported a problem, chances are the problem is on your end, be it an interfering extension/plugin, a custom hosts file, your DNS cache, etc.

If you do have a problem that is later solved, be it by us, yourself or another user, please post the situation/details and the resolution so others can avoid/solve any future dilemmas with ease.

Problem - RSS feeds not displaying properly

I'm the type of person who relies on my feed reader to tell me updates from different sites. This is great for getting updates without having to visit different sites all the time to check. Unfortunately, Batoto doesn't seem to support newsfeed at all for specific series pages. This site supports newsfeed on the main page, however...

I was expecting this when I subscribed to the newsfeed:

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/Denizon/content.jpg

Instead, I got this...

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y115/Denizon/newsfeed.jpg

I was hoping for the newsfeed to only show content from the updates, but instead it shows every reply as well. This will cause a spam of notifications on the news reader about things that has nothing to do with the updates. My request is for the site to somehow make it, so that the feed reader would only show the main updates while ignoring the replies. I hope that didn't sound too confusing.

If it's not possible, then I supposed I just have to deal with a minor inconvenience. But it would be greatly appreciated otherwise.

Solution

What URL do you have for the feed?  I have http://japanzai.com/index.php?board=10.0;action=.xml;type=rss;sa=news from the RSS emblem on the front page, and all I get is the new releases.  I seem to remember having the same problem originally, but this URL seems to have fixed it.

Yes, that's it! Thank you very much.

Actually, I was using the bookmark to directly subscribe to the feed instead of actually looking for the feed button. It became a habit since some site doesn't have one so I end up having to do that in the end.  But, thank you!

If you want to subscribe to our RSS feed, please click on the link in the "Network" block on the right hand side of our main page.
Otherwise, use the URL provided in the above answer.

If you aren't familiar with RSS and find yourself bookmarking several different sites, I highly recommend familiarizing yourself with it.
RSS is a great way to keep up with the latest news (or in this case, releases) from sites you would otherwise check manually.
Not all websites provide links to RSS feeds, but many of those that don't can be followed in the same regard using a simple bookmark tracked by your client, depending on which client you use and the site itself.
Using RSS feeds can save you a lot of manual checking and browsing, automatically checking feeds for you at specified intervals. They aren't hard to use, and I definitely suggest giving them a go.

For Firefox, I suggest brief: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/brief/
It's the first RSS client I ever used. It's very easy to use and has a simple interface to understand.
A screenshot of the interface: https://static-ssl-cdn.addons.mozilla.net/img/uploads/previews/full/53/53816.png?modified=1297347928
Brief makes it very easy to keep track of A LOT of feeds.

For Chrome/Chromium, first you should install this: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nlbjncdgjeocebhnmkbbbdekmmmcbfjd
It allows you to subscribe to RSS feeds by clicking on a link on the side of your address bar, as shown here: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/bs3Z3YpEu1-N86AYUp9lSLdRA0xQN2smZb4FcCdVingZ22CNi8AbP8Fzf-0uDiaELirQKTO3vQ=s640-h400-e365

To actually read the feeds on Chrome/Chromium, you're probably best off going to http://www.google.com/reader/
Sign in with your google account and you can follow your RSS feeds from any location.
eg. Sign in at uni and follow updates you subscribed to on your home browser.

Problem - No images showing in the online reader

Tried to look into the forums to see if I was missing something or if someone else had this issue but..I can't see any of the manga or even thumbnails in the manga reader.  Not that I mind going to batoto but I rather look at them here.  You guys are doing a great job btw! Thanks for reading

Solution

I still think you guys are doing a great job.  I did find a solution luckily and it was already posted but it applied to this situation as well
Worked like a charm for me. Thanks to blag and koro for reposting this helpful answer to the problem. Again, keep up the great work!

Riyuki followed the steps listed above that solved the "Cannot download with firefox" issue.

My first guess was that Javascript had been disabled or another addon was blocking our domain.
Try disabling Javascript and using our online reader and you'll see what I mean.

If you encounter an issue, please think back to any changes or issues your browser has undergone which may have caused the error; Riyuki's first guess was that it was caused by a shockwave issue he had experienced previously. Whether it was the cause or not, providing such information can help enormously.
If something is working for everyone else, chances are it's due to a modification you made yourself or a change undergone by your own personal browser.
Granted you can't figure out the solution yourself we will of course be happy to help, but by following some of the guidelines listed in this thread you may save yourself a lot of time and effort.

*If you do solve a problem yourself (and the issue hasn't already been addressed), please remember to post information regarding the problem and its solution so we can help others experiencing the same or similar issues.

Problem - Your account is awaiting admin approval

In order to prevent spam/spambots we have a few measures in place.
For every 100 spambots we nab, however, we're bound to grab an innocent user by mistake.

If you've been told that your account is awaiting admin approval, that means Project Honeypot has your IP blacklisted and/or your email address has been either interpreted as a spam address or also blacklisted.
Since the forum software does this automatically, we do not manually check over every blocked entry and attempt to ascertain whether or not a user is legitimate; hundreds of bots are blocked every week, many of them with normal usernames and email addresses. We cannot tell whether a registration is legitimate or not simply by looking at their IP/email.

Solution

Just because Project Honeypot has you blacklisted doesn't mean we won't accept you.
In order to set yourself apart from the innumerable spambots, simply post using a guest account where we're likely to see the post.

Option 1: Post something along the lines of "Hey, I registered under the name xxxx, but I'm told my account needs to be approved by an admin."
Option 2: If you don't want to let people know what username you've selected (for whatever reason) simply post as a guest using the same email you registered with. Only admins will be able to see your email address, and they'll be able to approve your account based on that address.
Option 3: I'd rather you take option 1 or 2, but if push comes to shove you can email me at korocresent@gmail.com and I'll sort it out. I may be asleep or in class though, so you may not see immediate results.

*If your account has been pending approval for 2 weeks or more and you still haven't acted, chances are it will be rejected alongside the spambots forced to wait for approval.
**After creating an account, if you do not log on for 80-90 days your account may be deleted without warning.
