Oso - Typesetting Application
« on: March 08, 2012, 12:13:48 am »
Timezone: GMT+1
Age group: 18+
Time available per week: hard to tell, depends on university workload
Past experience: None in typesetting, some in general picture editing. Mostly using GIMP in the past, quite new at Photoshop.
Which Project you'd like to help us with: I don't mind much, preferably shojo, I enjoyed LsL a lot so far, so that would be great, but it's probably fully occupied anyway x)

This is my very first try with typesetting and the first time I used photoshop too...so I'm pretty sure it's far from perfect, gomen nasai for potential newb mistakes.

/Btw, there was a font missing in the documents (Wildwords italic), which was indicated for thoughts, so after finding out it would cost me to download, I just used Wildwords italics bold, since that one was provided. xD

Page one
Last panel- Don't let the "Uwooohhh" touch the end of the page.

Page two, the opacity was accidentally switched to 55% (psd)- I'm just noting this.
Panel 2- Don't make the text so close to the edge of the bubble
*Remember to use correct fonts- pn 5; I don't consider that a shouting bubble.
Panel 6- "It's me." Make the font larger

Page 3
Panel 2- Make the text go more towards the center of the bubble
Panel 4- Don't put the exclamation point on a separate line (you can make the font smaller). I'm not sure what you did to "DARING" and "HOLY WATER", but try to make the stroke 3-4.
Panel 7- The "blahblah wet wipes"; try to put the text in an ellipse shape.

*Same opacity problem with page 4
Panels 1 & 3- Center text in the bubble

Please correct things that I've listed; you may get a second test.

Good luck at the second test !  :aw:

Btw, the font is Wild Words, which you can use in 3 forms : Roman, Italic and BoldItalic. To be honest, I don't understand why you couldn't find it. Oh and one more thing, we usually use BoldItalic for shouting, so don't use it for thoughts.

Here's a font-pack for you. I hope it helps a bit : http://main.storminheaven.org/guide/type/fonts.html

Aww thank you very much Arya <3
I re-istalled the font with the package you posted, now it works :3

I tried to fix everything K.F pointed out, as for the .PSDs, my apologies, i thought they were just to control how I worked on the TS, so I didn't bother to adjust the opacity afterwards (used it to have a reference on how the original text was placed and written right while working). Also, about the *daring* and Holy Water, I changed them to normal layers to be able to distort them (as I said I never worked with PS before), I noticed I can do that without changing the layer type meanwhile though, sorry for that.
I was mostly insecure about, the following things though- I assume there is a limit on how many different font sizes we should use//on how small the smallest font size should be for reading comfort, and about how much hyphenation we should use (preferably smaller text for less hyphens or preferably some hyphens and bigger text?)
I know there's probably no overall true answer to this, but maybe you can tell me if I covered those points in a satisfactory way or if there are any improvements to be made.

Well, here you go with the revised test, I hope it's better now :3

The font size is usually 14-18 px (it depends on the bubble size, shape etc. ). We prefer smaller text and no hyphens ( you can change the horizontally scale to 90-95% ).

Maybe you'd like to read a short tutorial on Typesetting, if you're interested to improve yourself. It's pretty much self-explanatory.

i listed in the directions the certain fonts that you should use. even if you do become a tser, you'll have to work with different fonts anyway.

that being said, i'll actually check the second test after school.

Well my question was solely about the size, which isn't indicated in the directions, not the font type ;)

Thanks both of you for the answers and thank you Arya for the guide links^^

You pass. Just remember when to make the font larger or smaller to fit inside the bubble better.

And red his name becomes. Welcome aboard :P

The font size is usually 14-18 px (it depends on the bubble size, shape etc. ).

The font size also depends on the size of the page (we usually do 1400px height for tanks, 1200px for mags) and the font used.
If you're ever unsure, just post on the forum, hop on IRC or look over/scrutinize someone else's work (*cough* KF's) for perspective.
Don't take the things I say too seriously. Or literally. I don't speak in absolutes.
Everything I say should be taken with a grain of salt. It'll make both of our lives easier.
