How to buy manga directly Honto.jp (AKA How to be a Raw Provider)

(1/3) > >>

katsudon:
It is always good to support the people who created the series that you love, and a good way is to order mangas.

Why Honto.jp?
Bk1 merged with Honto so I figure, I should make a buying guide for those of you who have a credit card and wants to add some books to your collection.
The price is on par with Amazon Japan, with better (cheaper) shipping options while taking a hit in the time of delivery.  I usually use SAL, which you're looking at 30-40 days to get from Japan to America.

Another place that I order from is YesAsia, they pretty much marked up the price of the books so they're able to offer free shipping if you order over a certain amount.  The time it takes to ship for that option is about the same 30-40 days from Japan to USA.  They also offer some manga in chinese.

Step 0: Register an account with Honto.jp
Very simple, browse to their site, and click on where I've indicated for "new member registration"

Step 1: Entering your email address
You must use a valid address here, Then click on that box where I've indicated next to "Agree and Continue"

Step 2: Initial registration complete
You will now get a validation email from Honto.jp to verify your email address

Step 2.5: Read your email
Open your mail client, and if your client doesn't support Japanese, you'll get some garbled text, as seen in the example, (note that gmail works fine for me, while this example is forwarded from verizon webmail)
But regardless, just click on that long link to get validated as I've indicated.

Step 3: Fill out more info
Time to fill out more info that they would need to complete your registration.  note that for furigana, you actually have to enter Japanese text here that's closest to how you'd pronounce your name.  use this Online Keyboard to assist you.  When you're done, click on that light green-yellow button below to continue.

Step 4: Verify what you just filled out
There is where you can go back and correct any mistakes, press the green-yellow button to continue

Step 5: You are done
See next post for how to actually buy books

katsudon:
Entering your shipping address/credit card for the first time
Click on that blue bubble that says MY at the upper right hand corner to enter your address for the first time

Now Select アドレス帳情報 to enter your address

Click on that light yellow/green button to enter a new address

There are two tabs here, the only one you care about is the oversee tab, so in the first box, put in the name of the shipping address you want to label.  I use home1.  Then select the 'second tab' which indicates oversea address, and the labels changed to english!  Fill it out and click on the yellow/green button to continue.

Verify everything is correct and press the yellow/green button to continue (the white button is to make corrections)

Your primary address is now listed

Now select クレジットカード情報 to enter your credit card info.  and then you have to click on the yellow/green button to enter a new card

use the drop down box to select the card you'll be using, I'm using American Express here in this example, the next box is card number, then expiration date, and the name on the card.   click on yellow/green button when you're done

now click on the yellow/green button again when you've verified that all the info is correct.

katsudon:
NOW, let's buy a book or a few more

First, to decide what I want to buy, I went to mangaupdates.com to search for a title that I want.  This works well if you don't know the Japanese name to use.
In this example, find the title, and copy the japanese text

Next, paste that japanese title in the honto search english, and press the green button

The list of the books with the same title should show up, click on the green button of the one you want, in this example, we're buying volume 11

you're now in the check out area, you can go back and shop for more books, but in this case, we're going to buy this one, press the green button to continue

you'll have to put in your password at this point

NOW, this is the place where it stops most people, you need to put in a japanese address, it doesn't matter what it is, since you won't be using it for shipping.    use the examples that they give you on the right side, and fill out the rest (follow my example, and it'll work).  You only have to do this once, and for future orders, this won't show up anymore

This is where you select shipping method, I recommand SAL, next panel is where your credit card that's already entered, 3rd panel indicates that you won't be using any "bonus points".  Select green button to continue

This is the chart of the SAL shipping rate to North America.  Honto only charges you how much it costs to ship, so you won't get charged until they actually shipped your stuff.  When I purchase 3 books, it and the free box that came in, weight 730gram, so i was charged for the cost of the books + 880 yen (under 800gram, but over 700 gram).  note that for this book, they have it in stock and will be shipped within 24 hours, and then you have to wait 30-40 days give or take for it to show up.

here is where you get to verify all the info is correct, make sure on the right side, that your address, shipping method, and credit card info is correct. then press the green button and again to purchase.

You'll get an email with the list of your orders and then awhile later shipping confirmation and final charge

Wow that part about the Japanese address tripped me up too. I have an account leftover from when honto.jp was bk1, I wonder if it will make me go through this  next time I order from them.
Nice guide :D Ordering online has taught me some new words like 購入 and 登録  XD
Also, when I registered my address I put the entire thing on the "address 1" line, including State, Zip Code and Country, and I got it okay :D
As for shipping time, I usually get airmail in exactly 10 days and SAL is really all over the place, I've gotten it 2 months later, 1 month later, and 3 weeks later, all on different occasions. Surprisingly, the fastest SAL happened right during the Bk1/Honto merger and I placed the order during Golden Week.
Next time I get an order in I should post it on here. I always love your posts.

I apologize first if I am bringing up an old post, but I feel that Yes Asia.com should also be included here I find it is cheaper to use and it allows for free shipping in bulk orders exceeding $39.99 and I don't know if Honto.jp has this already but YesAsia gives you an option so that you can read it in different languages depending on where you are.
