Senbonzakura can't save me now (require cleaner help)

So i've been reading this guys tutorials; http://senbonzakura.kageyoshi.net/
and I can redraw the lines with the pen tool quite easy but what i don't get is how to fill in backgrounds (that are white because of removed text). He says to use a gradient with a film grain overlay but it just looks completely unnatural... using the clone tool makes it looks too repetitive.

Any help is appreciated :D

i never understand how to do overlay, i always use topaz denoise+clean if i want to fix the raw

There are quite a few (secret) techniques in the school of the fist of the north redraw...

Kidding aside, seeing the page you having trouble with could result in more appropriate advice

Oh you know the cleaner test page 1? The grass in the top left is a nightmare to redraw I honestly don't know how you guys do it

there were not my tutorials to begin with, you got to used the Clone tool wisely buddy!!
